Kanchi matters as both a place of anticipated family reunion and the point of departure for Aditha Karikalan’s journey to Kadambur. The golden palace he built there for his parents gives the city a private significance amid the kingdom’s political danger: he longs to welcome them, yet doubts he will live to do so.

The Palace and the Absent Family

In Kadambur, Aditha speaks of a golden palace he built for his parents in Kanchi. The image of bats circling the palace stands against the purpose for which he made it: a residence where he hoped to receive them. His father, Sundara Chozhar, is described as trapped in the Pazhuvettarayar faction’s control, while Aditha wonders whether he will ever have the good fortune to welcome his parents in Kanchi during his lifetime. The city is thus bound to an unrealized reunion, and the palace’s promise is sharpened by the possibility that its builder may not survive to fulfill it.

A Departure Charged with Hope

Kanchi is also where Aditha begins his journey to Kadambur. He later explains that he set out with the intention of making amends with Nandhini and still hoped to put matters between them right. News learned on the way changed his sense of what he had a right to ask of her: instead of approaching their meeting with confidence in reconciliation, he arrived feeling unworthy even to seek her pardon. Kanchi therefore marks the beginning of a journey whose original purpose is unsettled before the encounter takes place.

Kanchi in the Kadambur Conversation

At Kadambur, Aditha connects the distant city to immediate dangers and unfinished obligations. His uncertainty about returning there to welcome his parents accompanies his fear that he may not leave Kadambur alive. Later, when asked why he delayed speaking with Nandhini, he describes the turmoil in his mind and his need for time to order his thoughts before attempting a full explanation. Kanchi remains outside that conversation as the place from which he came, but its palace and hoped-for family reunion give emotional weight to the life and future he cannot take for granted.
